Living tradition of icons revealed by
speakers in Euclid church’s Lenten series

Three major Northeast Ohio experts in icons will tell about different aspects of the two-dimensional images of Christ and the saints created to give human beings a window into heaven. Although usually associated with Eastern Orthodox Catholic churches, the hourlong Lenten season presentations will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays at Ss. Robert and William Church, a Roman Catholic congregation at 367 E. 260th St. in Euclid.

Pepper Pike -In building upon a successful inaugural 2011 event, volunteers from Ursuline College gathered earlier this month for the school's second community-wide Volunteer Day, which integrated the service efforts of students, teachers, graduates, board members/trustees, staff, administrators and friends of the school.
The staff of Tiffany Mushrush Mentzer, Ursuline Director of Alumnae Relations, coordinated the event, in which several groups of volunteers traveled to various Northeast Ohio sites to provide a morning of active service to the community. These sites were the Cleveland Foodbank, Geauga County Humane Society/Rescue Village, Habitat for Humanity, Hospice of the Western Reserve, MedWish, and the St. Angela Center on the Ursuline Campus.

Students, faculty and women religious from the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland and Ursuline College got together recently and performed service at several sites throughout the Cleveland Diocese

What's a little adversity?

The women who run Esperanza Threads, a mission-driven organic clothing shop in the Detroit-Shoreway area, have had to battle economic and medical challenges in the past year.

And they're not giving up.

Inside the showroom are racks of women's and baby's clothes in simple styles, made from 100 percent organic cotton.

But it's down in the basement where the nonprofit's real crusade takes place.

Here, staffers each month provide free training for jobs in the sewing industry. They teach unemployed people to work the foot pedals of a commercial sewing machine and to make the needle speed through seams and tight-corner pivoting. Students learn to operate a sewing machine

Sisters, along with hundreds of family and friends, filled the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of these six inspirational women. Together these sisters represent 375 years of dedicated service as members of the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland! Enjoy a few photos below.

EUGENE, Ore. – Imagine your kid is good enough to compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Big thrill, right?

Double that feeling, and you begin to approach what Sue and Michael Infeld of University Heights are experiencing at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, which take off Friday with a full schedule at Hayward Field. The Infeld's two oldest daughters, Maggie and Emily, will run separately in three events and could run as many as seven races if they reach all three finals, though that is unlikely.

The name Dorothy Kazel will certainly resonate with Cleveland Catholics. An Ursuline Sister from Cleveland, Kazel was one of four American missionary women, three religious sisters and one laywoman murdered in El Salvador in 1980 by Salvadoran troops.
Today's cook is also Dorothy Kazel, Sister Dorothy's sister-in-law and childhood friend. Nearly 32 years after the horrifying phone call that informed them of the tragedy, Kazel, her husband Jim and other family members continue their efforts to keep alive the memory of Sister Dorothy and her sisters, and the tremendous compassion for which they gave their lives.
But for Kazel, memories of Dorothy go back to their childhood days growing up in Cleveland's Lithuanian neighborhood.

Over 500 hundred people packed the the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity Saturday afternoon to witness the installation of the new leadership team. 

Sisters Susan Durkin, Maureen Doyle, Susan Bremer, Kathleen Flanagan and Ann Letitia stood before their community of sisters, family, and friends and graciously accepted their new roles as the leadership team of the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland.    

Villa Angela-St. Joseph's sprint relay quartet of C.J. Germany, Devon Bolden, Rodney Burse and Marcellus Embry all wore blue T-shirts during the Division III state track and field meet that proclaimed themselves as the "Fantastic Four."

All it takes in D-III relays is a special four to equal one — as in one fantastic climb to the top of the podium and one moment with team hardware long dreamed of on the corner of East 185th Street and Lake Shore Boulevard that finally came to fruition.
