 Psalm 92's affirmation, "It is good to give thanks. . . " is echoed in every religious tradition. Even a quick search on the Internet yields prayers of gratitude in Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist traditions as well as the thanksgiving psalms of the Judeo-Christian tradition.

Benedictine monk David Steindl-Rast calls gratitude the "heart of prayer." The recovery community reminds us: "An attitude of gratitude; it's not just a platitude."

And contemporary scientific research on the body/ mind connection finds that grateful people enjoy a boosted immune system and lowered coronary risk.

Why, then, is gratitude often so far down on our "to do" list?

Might gratitude be overshadowed by constant media messages of craving which focus us on what does not really matter?

Although crises in our lives can act as lasers beaming us to what we deem truly valuable, deep down we always know what really matters. So, barring a crisis, how do we re-connect to our soul truth?

Gratitude's power can shift our hearts from a dissatisfied malaise to joyful contentedness. On a recently rainy and gray day, when the weather matched my mood, I was walking into Cuyahoga Community College's Eastern Campus from the parking lot when I saw a woman struggle to get out of her car with a book bag and a purse while swinging her paralyzed legs between two crutches.

She offered gloomy me, walking on two healthy legs, a genuine "good morning." She changed my day through her joyful smile. Gratitude welled up in my heart; in an instant, I was grateful to be able to walk.

She was a transformative "grace" because her attitude prompted me to be grateful in my being and in my soul. Instead of telling myself that I should be grateful, I experienced heart-felt gratitude.

Gratitude's transformative potential is rooted in its power to establish relationships.

Although it is tempting to imagine the Academy Awards without winners' lists of "thank you's," wouldn't the show be sterile without them? We are reminded that each person, no matter how successful, talented, or wealthy, lives in an invisible support structure, a network of relationships that provide meaning for each life.

As a child, my beloved aunt would be on the phone to my mother in 48 hours if my thank you note to her had not arrived in the mail. My aunt's expectation of my response taught me to respect her generosity; she would not allow herself to be invisible and unacknowledged. As an adult, I understand that my small note to her strengthened our relationship by replenishing her emotional energy, an affirming "charge" of sorts that enabled her to continue to invest in a relationship with me.

Professional clergy of every denomination can easily attest to phone calls or visits from their congregational members who wish to give back after a cure or a positive result from a medical procedure.

An entire Oprah segment was devoted to reunions between those who were rescued and their rescuers -- people who just wanted to say a simple "thank you" to a clergyperson, fireman, doctor, police officer, teacher, social worker or bystander who intervened for them in a crisis. We crave the human connection, the meaningful relationship, even if it lasted a few seconds.

A "deep down" conversation to have, perhaps during half-time on this weekend of family, food and football, might be: How do my actions show my gratitude?

Spend quiet time asking yourself: What inspires me? What touches me? What am I grateful for that I have never expressed? For what and for whom might I be grateful in my religious tradition, my education, my ordinary life?

You'll be investing in your soul, your health and your community. How can you go wrong?

Beloved Teacher and Minister of Prayer

Sister Mary Antoine was a high school math and science teacher for 31 years, before returning to the motherhouse to oversee the community’s sewing operation, a ministry which afforded her time and space for the contemplative prayer she loved. The beloved educator and minister of prayer died November 27 in the Ursuline Saint Angela Center where she had resided since 2006. She was 84.

The former Mildred Brozovic was born January 23, 1927, in Canton, Ohio, to George and Margaret Brozovic. A graduate of Mount Marie High School in Canton, she joined the Ursulines from St. Joseph Parish, Canton, September 8, 1947, and professed final vows August 23, 1953. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Ursuline College and a master’s from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

Sister Mary Antoine taught two years at the elementary level — at St. Joseph School, Collinwood, and Our Lady of Peace, Cleveland — before beginning her high school tenure which included assignments at Villa Angela Academy, Ursuline-Sacred Heart Academy and Beaumont School. In 1981 she retired from classroom teaching and moved to the motherhouse to assume responsibility for the sewing operations, a ministry in which she served 25 years. Through the years she also tutored students needing assistance in math.

Contemplative by nature, Sister Mary Antoine enjoyed a solitary life, but happily joined with SAC sisters for prayer and other spiritual programs. She welcomed visitors, especially family and Saint Angela Center sisters and staff. She was a faithful and reliable source of prayer support for any and all in need. And she was an avid crafter, crocheting baby items and afghans by request, for charity, and for sale in the community gift shop.

Sister Mary Antoine will be remembered for her gentle and prayerful spirit and her quiet, contemplative way. She was a faith-filled woman, a dedicated teacher and minister of prayer/service, a loving sister and a loyal friend.

Sister Mary Antoine is survived by brothers Robert and Joseph Brozovic, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Donations in her name may be made to the Ministry Fund of the Ursuline Sisters.

If asked, Ursuline Sister Shelia Marie Tobbe could share plenty of stories about times when she knew she had positively affected someone's life through her ministry and volunteer work.
However, she'd rather not.

"I'd like to turn that around and say that these individuals affected my life," said Tobbe, the mission and outreach coordinator of the Thea Bowman Center in Cleveland's Mount Pleasant neighborhood. "If it's not a mutuality, there's no real transformation. When we try to go and fix people, it doesn't work.

"It has to be a transformative ministry, and that's what I tell all the volunteers. You have as much need of being here as they have of you, and then you have a true faith interaction : that's what Bishop (Anthony) Pilla used to say."

Still, Tobbe has led food drives, given thousands of computers to needy families and aided the education of Clevelanders during her time as the Bowman Center's mission and outreach coordinator and executive director. For that reason and many more, Tobbe was recently awarded with the organization's first Beacon of Hope Award at its annual benefit dinner at Casa di Borally in Richmond Heights.

"In honoring Sister Sheila Marie Tobbe, you have chosen an Ursuline Sister who has demonstrated many of Thea Bowman's qualities," Cleveland Auxiliary Bishop Roger W. Gries wrote in the event's program. "Her tireless work with the city parishes during the configuration was outstanding."

Tobbe grew up in Cleveland Heights, attending St. Ann School. In 1963, she entered the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland andHprofessed her final vows nine years later. She spent time teaching and coordinating educational programs at St. Catherine, St. Cecilia, St. Henry and Epiphany parishes.

She remembers people laughing at her because of her age in the '60s when she wanted to take part in the Diocese's El Salvadoran mission. In 1979, she took a trip there, and her ministry further crystallized. That trip : during which she met Archbishop Oscar Romero prior to his assassination : also inspired her six-year mission in El Salvador during the '90s as a member of the Cleveland Diocesan Latin American Team.

She knew Father Dan Begin before her trip from their time working together in the early >80s at St. Catherine Parish. When she came back, he immediately recruited her as Pastoral Associate at Epiphany Parish and St. Cecilia Parish.

"When I came back, he said, >we really have to think about the city differently. It really is becoming mission territory, so all of your experience in El Salvador, we'll need to bring to the fore here and create a mission in the city,'" Tobbe said of Fr. Begin.

Tobbe made good on his wishes, and became an advisor to the Bowman Center's board once it opened in 2001. As her role has grown there, Tobbe continues working to help Mt. Pleasant residents fight the foreclosure and banking crises, as well as problems with health care and education.

"Our families and children are really being left with nothing," she said.

On Saturdays, the Center distributes food, and one Tuesday evening a month it does the same. The organization's sponsoring parishes also help the Center provide hot meals from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Children are also provided with healthy snacks after school during the week.

Tutoring programs are also provided in conjunction with the No Child Left Behind legislation, and the Bowman Center also provides a summer program and 4-H club for children.

As part of its adult education program, about 20 people come daily for GED instruction, along with various computer classes. She said about 10 percent of 17,000 or so residents in the Mt. Pleasant area have computers. To boost that figure, the Center provides free computers with installation and two years of maintenance at the end of 25 hours of instruction through the Connect Your Community program, which has been active at the Bowman Center for about a year. More than 2,000 computers have been provided as a part of the program.

What keeps her motivated to work in an area she says is "at the bottom of any statistic in Cleveland?"

"Prayer, what else but prayer?" Tobbe said.
