Outside the wind is howling and branches play a drummers tune on window panes. The promised storm has arrived and as I watch the swirling snow and drifts beginning to form, just for a moment the wind dies down and I can hear the gentle silence of snow falling on snow. At that moment I am alive to the wonder and beauty of all of creation. Sitting in the warmth and comfort of my living room I am aware of how blessed I am and challenged by the knowledge of my brothers and sisters who are cold and alone to face the storm this day. In this moment of silence I can hear the voice of God speaking deep within my soul and I am moved to pray for all those who live on the fringes of society and who face the storms of life with fear rather than with wonder. Silence calls me to openness to God and to all of creation, we are united, we are one. From my sheltered room safe from the storm I pray to live a more gentle and compassionate life, reaching out in prayer and service to all who are in need. God give me the grace and the willingness to serve always. ~ Jeannette Kearns OSU
