Autumn

Autumn is my favorite season of the year. I love the beautiful colors that transform the foliage to glorious reds, yellows, and golds. It also challenges me to pay attention because these changes sometimes happen overnight. I can easily miss the daily transformations by not paying attention or being present to what is happening in nature around me. By the time I notice, leaves are gone, branches are bare, and winter is at our doorstep.

Autumn is also the most fickle season. If the season’s temperatures and rainfall amounts are not just right, the autumn colors may not appear and the trees become bare too quickly, without any final burst of glory. We have no choice but to wait until next year and hope the season offers us its fleeting beauty.

I am in the autumn of my life, aware that my personal winter is approaching (very slowly, I hope!) and that I need to be mindful and aware of the graces each day offers me. Autumn is a good time to reflect on the preciousness of our days and the need to pay attention. Every minute offers its own grace. God‘s presence is around us, and all we need to do is notice. This autumn, I hope and pray that our eyes and hearts remain open to the beauty God pours out around us every single day.
