Happy Easter! Celebrate! Rejoice! Repeat.

Not only is the Resurrection of Christ central to our Christian faith, it is an event to be celebrated for more than one day of the year. The Church knows that we cannot contain our joy in just one day of celebration; every daily liturgy in the week after Easter Sunday is celebrated as if it were Easter Sunday all over again.

And the Easter season lasts 50 days, ten days longer than Lent!

However, the Resurrection isn’t just a one-time event. St. Paul reminds us that if we have died with Christ, we will also rise with him. Christ is just first; God’s same plan is for us to rise in glory in praise of the God of life; and not just us, but all creation is destined for glory.

How different lives would be if we saw ourselves and our world through the lens of the Resurrection. It would change our lives. That is what it did for Peter and the other disciples, who denied him or fled in terror at the time that Jesus needed them most. None of them (except John) was present with Jesus through his passion and death. Unlike the women disciples, they hid themselves in fear and grief. Even Easter morning when Mary Magdalen announced to them that she had seen the Lord, they were skeptical. It took Jesus walking through their locked door and showing them his wounds to turn their fear and grief into joy.

Jesus does the same for us. When we lock our doors in fear, anger, grief, or exhaustion, those locks won’t keep Jesus out of our lives or away from our pain. He is risen! He is how the story ends—in Resurrection glory.

Happy Easter! Celebrate for 50 days and beyond.
