The Power of Wonder

“Rather than living every day as if it’s my last, I’ve shifted to a gentler approach of living every day as if it’s my first. I want to wake up and meet the day with the wonder of a newborn, to cultivate childlike qualities like curiosity and play.” Suleika Jaouad

This quotation was published online as the “Word for the Day” from Grateful Living.org on June 13th. It immediately attracted my attention! I so often wake up with a mental “To Do” list guaranteed to weigh me down before my toe even touches the floor. I’ve tried many approaches to start my day more positively but none of them has become the magic solution so I started pondering how this author’s wisdom might offer me more hope.

A newborn is . . .

  • separated from the familiar yet soothed by human touch and voice,
  • startled by the commotion of light and sound,
  • suddenly awakened to a new way of being, and
  • oriented to grow, learn and explore.

My evening prayer is different now. Before I sleep I make a “Wonder” list for the next day as I ask God to awaken me with curiosity about all that will be new and marvelous in it. My “next day” may not be as dramatic as the newborn’s but it doesn’t need to be dreaded either – it can be welcomed with a sense of awe at the newness it holds, the growth it makes possible and the time to nurture relationships it affords.
