Scripture readings and prayers on hope.

Reading Isaiah 40: 29-31, 43:1-2

The Lord is the everlasting God. He strengthens those who are weak and tired. Those who hope in the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall rise on wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not grow weak.

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; your troubles will not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. I will give up whole nations to save your life, because you are precious to me and because I love you and give you honor. Do not be afraid because I am with you!”

What do we hope for?

We hope for the quickening of our hearts, the silencing of our words

when we know that where we are is sacred space.

We hope for those experiences when the earth draws us into an

awareness of your awesome presence.

We hope for communion with you through one another and the earth.

We hope for the generous kindness of others awakening our heart to

your presence.

We hope for joy of your presence within each of us, breathing goodness

and grace, expanding our hearts with love.

We hope for the felt mystery of your enduring peace as we pour our

selves out as your disciples.

We hope you walk through the darkness of today’s encounter that we

might experience more about your love and presence in the

world.

Meditation

Take a moment to imagine yourself as an young eagle on the edge

of it’s nest. You are an eagle. Imagine yourself wondering,

anticipating what it must be like to fly. Picture yourself out

stretching your wings toward the winds of the universe. Longing

seizes you and you lean out toward the very edge of the nest.

Instinct and a push from another person sends you out on gales of

soaring joy. Your wings capture the wind. You fly in freedom.

May the power of Christ, the Risen One, help us take the risk of love

rejoicing in the journey, the wonder of the wind, mystery and the

flow of Spirit.

“He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the son and hold you in the palm of His hand.”
