Remembering Sister Patricia

Posted January 06, 2025 in Obituaries

Educator, and woman of prayer

Sister Patricia Mulhern was born in 1936 to Edward and Lucille Mulhern as the only daughter with four brothers: John (deceased), Austin, Robert and Michael. She attended Holy Cross School and Villa Angela Academy where after graduation, she worked in the field of business for 12 years but always felt a call to religious life

Responding to that desire for religious life, she entered the Immaculate Heart of Mary Congregation in 1967 in Monroe, Michigan. Because of health issues and family concerns, she decided it was not the appropriate time for her. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College in 1969, she took classes at St, John College to become an elementary school teacher.

In 1975, she entered the Ursuline Community to continue her ministry in education. While she obtained a permanent teaching certificate, she earned a master degree in educational administration in 1987 from Ursuline College. Her education ministry included the following schools: Holy Cross, Immaculate Conception Willoughby, Christ the King and St. Charles.

In semi-retirement, she tutored in the Ursuline Institute of Learning and worked in the Ursuline gift shop where she created items for purchase. Among her famous creations were the “baby bib and bib cloths” and hanging kitchen towels. Many of these gifts were found in baby rooms and kitchens.

She loved sending written correspondence, sending numerous cards to family, friends and community members also including the promise of prayers. She was always willing to serve others through her gifts and talents when needed along with the promise of prayer.

In 2018 Sr. Pat moved to Light of Hearts Villa where she continued her ministry of serving others, writing correspondence and praying. She reached out to residents with limitations through her gentle manner and talents, making them feel important.

In April of 2024, when health issues reoccurred, she moved to Regina Health Center where she continued her desire to reach out to others, especially as woman of prayer.
